Description
7th-12th century AD. A group of two bifacial discoid pendants with ribbed suspension loops, comprising: a pendant with low-relief cross on altar beneath arch to one face, St George as horse and rider on the other, slaying the dragon with his spear; a second pendant with low-relief cross displaying the inscription 'HS XC NHKA' (Jesus Christ is victorious) in each quarter, the second face with the Mother of God in orans pose and the inscription '??' (Mother of God) in the field. See Wamser, HvL., Die Welt Von Byzanz-Europas Ostliches Erbe, Munich, 2004, p.211, 318, items 311,588, for similar examples in lead. 9.9 grams total, 31-34mm (1 1/4"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. Lead medallions with religious images very widely employed by pilgrims visiting the Holy Sepulchre. The icons of Christ and of His Holy Mother were the most employed, often joined by the images of Saint George or Saint Demetrios, the military Saints par excellence.
