Inscribed "Robt. Salomons/Boston" in a later hand on the reverse, identified on a presentation plaque, fragmentary label from "Ackermann..." affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 23 5/8 x 35 3/4 in. (60.0 x 91.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, retouch primarily to the sky, wax repair to the reverse, craquelure.

N.B. We would like to thank Charles Lanagan for his assistance with this lot. He confirmed the identity of the vessel, writing, "From her mizzenmast she is flying the signal flags of Marryat's code post 1840, 2nd distinguishing pendant 5409. This correctly identifies her as the Naomi." Mr. Lanagan also explained the use of the alternate spelling of the artist's name on the reverse. Consulting A. S. Davidson's book (see below), he noted that "...in his later years, Salmon may have reverted to the earlier..." spelling of "Solomans."

Based upon the location, the vessel, and signal flags, the suggested date for this painting is c. 1840s, not the date of 1830 that is recorded on the presentation plaque.

Condition: Framed dimensions are 28 1/4 x 40 1/4 x 2 1/2 inches.
