Description
Chinese School, mid 19th century, oil on canvas maritime or nautical painting of a clipper ship sailing off the coast of a Chinese port. Sailors are visible off the deck of the ship, with harbor buildings in the background, surrounded by mountains. Unsigned. Housed in a carved and painted black frame with gilt rabbet edge. Sight: 24" W x 18 1/4" H. Framed: 28" W x 23" H.

Condition
Relined, with craquelure and discoloration throughout, some abrasions causing varnish and paint loss to surface, largest 3". Some very light scattered inpainting throughout, see blacklight photos for reference. Frame is heavily worn with losses to paint, gilt, and carving and has been repaired. Painting is loose in frame.
