Description
I recently found a box of Mongolian ritual implements that I collected in the 1990s when Mongolia was first opening up to the West after the fall of the Soviet Union. Most were made of different colored metals, and seemed to be from one local area in Mongolia. It was also a period when the internet was first beginning to be used by the general public to sell antique items directly between different countries, as PayPal and eBay we're just beginning to become the powerhouses that they are today. I was able to collect more than 30 Dorjes, Vadras, Bells, and other ritual implements made of bronze, brass, and other metals. These were not the refined classic Tibetan type implements, but are the early to mid 20th Century folk style Mongolian types. They are far less common and much more idiosyncratic than the classic examples. I believe that all of them were made during the period of Soviet occupation, which began in the late 1920s and which ended in the 1980s. I believe that they were all made for practice and not for sale to tourists. The majority of them are probably 50 to 90 years old. This auction is for 2 very unusual ritual Choppers that are made of multiple metals. I have not seen any others like them before or since. This auction is for both. size will follow
