Description
Gorham "Tudor" pattern repousse two-handled tureen, the lid having an urn form finial, the body and cover decorated with ornate bands including floral, foliate, mask, scroll, and strapwork, the body centering scrolling cartouches one with a monogram, the whole rising on a rounded rectangular base with paw feet. Created for and exhibited at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Maker's mark, 1580, cross and sickle date marks to underside. Note: Accompanied by Gorham inquiry report from The Owl At The Bridge citing that the sculpting was executed by Frederick Kohlhagen, the chasing by David Wilmot, and a drawing from box 20 in the archives. Provenance: Acquired from Beverly Bremer in Atlanta, Georgia in 1994; from the Blakely Estate, Buford, Georgia. Approx. h. 8.5", w. 14.5", d. 9", total weight 80.325ozt. Ahlers & Ogletree, Inc. reserves the right to require payment for this Lot via secured funds such as wire transfer and/or certified check.
Condition
Monogrammed GAK to cartouche on body. Few dents to rim of lid, rim of body, second cartouche and underside -- does not distract from the aesthetic of the piece. Scattered surface wear commensurate with scratches and scuffing.
