Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956) -- Acrylic on Canvas
Item Details
Description
This lot consists of an unframed acrylic painting on loose canvas, rendered in the abstract expressionist style of modern artist Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956). A hand-painted inscription at bottom reads, “Jackson Pollock”.

Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956) was a hugely prolific artist of the mid-20th century, whose "drip painting" (sometimes called "action painting") broke ground for countless artists - from Helen Frankenthaler to Morris Louis, Frank Stella, and many others. He was deeply influenced by the writings of Carl Jung, the paintings of Janet Sobel, and the indigenous art of North America. Today, Pollock's work lives on in a blaze of legend, movement, and critical debate. This was exactly his intention.

Pollock's wife, the artist Lee Krasner, once offered an anecdote that seems to say it all: "Pollock used to give his pictures conventional titles ... but now he simply numbers them. Numbers are neutral. They make people look at a picture for what it is, a pure painting.
