L.S. Lowry (English, 1887 - 1976) - Oil on Canvas
Item Details
Description
This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, done in the social realist style of L.S. Lowry (English, 1887-1976). Handwritten inscription at lower right reads, "L.S. Lowry".

Laurence Stephen Lowry (English, 1887-1976) is famous for documenting everyday, postwar life in the Northwest of England. His distinctive style of painting could almost be likened to folk art, with the "matchstick" stylization of human figures and the "mysterious unpopulated landscapes" of which Lowry was so fond. Retrospectives of Lowry's astonishing body of work (most of which has only been discovered in the years since his death) have taken place in Nanjing, China and at the Tate in London, England. Lowry has been honored through dance, statuary, and film. Lowry actually declined appointment to the Order of the British Empire in 1955 and 1961, as well as turning down a knighthood in 1968 and appointments to the Order of the Companions of Honor in 1972 and 1976. He was a modest man, a true student of the people and the arts.
