BIOGRAPHY:
A poor and utterly unknown girl from the East End, Klinghoffer rose to prominence at a young age when her first exhibition at the Hampstead Gallery took the artistic world by storm in 1919. Painter of portraits, particularly children. Born 18 May 1900 of Polish-Jewish parents near Lemberg, Austria, and brought to London as a baby. Studied at the Central School and at the Slade School 1919-21. Member of the N.E.A.C. 1933. Married Joseph W. F. Stoppelman, writer, in 1926; lived in Holland and France and from 1939 in the United States. Has traveled widely in Mexico and Europe.Her work was much admired by her many mentors such as Bernard Meninsky, Alfred Wolmark and Sir Jacob Epstein who recommended her to the gallery.
