19th C. Nepalese Wood Mask w/ Moustache & Handle
Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Nepal, Himalayan region, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine hand-carved wood mask comprised of an ovoid, convex head and a rectangular handle that projects downwards from the bottom. The stylized visage presents slender, openwork eyes beneath a heavy brow, a straight nose, a prominent chin, risen cheek bones, and a petite mouth held slightly open beneath a crescent-shaped moustache, all flanked by a pair of circular ears. The extended handle exhibits a high, central rib that divides it in half vertically and is adorned by a series of incised parallel striations. A rich mocha-hued patina envelops the entirety of this unique vizard. Size: 6.5" W x 15.625" H (16.5 cm x 39.7 cm)
