Item Details

Description

John de Barth Walbach (1766â€“1757.) Autograph letter signed. Fort McHenry. October 4th, 1808. 4to, 1 pg. Ink on laid with watermark. ********* Written to Col. Burbeck, giving an update on the stores at the fort, and also giving notice of the capture of a deserter, Michael Johnson who "has now a chain and ball riveted to his right leg, which I hope will prevent another elopement, without hindering him from earning his bread at the Public works with the other soldiers." Walbach fought in in the French Revolutionary Wars and the War of 1812. He was one of only a few foreign-born officers in the U.S. military. He served until the age of 90, which also afforded him the distinction of being the oldest acting officer in U.S. military history.
