Item Details
Description
Wonderful sky-blue cloak, embroidered throughout with six-pointed stars in silver and edged with the motifs of the collar of the Order of Carlos III. 18th century.
It is lined with a matching cape with the anagram III crowned between rampant lions, and edged with fringed trimmings. On the left side there is a large cross. The Royal and Distinguished Order of Carlos III was created in 1771 by the same king, in gratitude for the birth of his first grandson, who ensured the continuance of the dynasty. Its purpose was to reward people who had rendered a special service to the King or the Crown, regardless of their aristocratic titles.
There are very few examples of cloaks of this type in Spain; one of them is in the Museo del Traje (MT131325A). Four are preserved in the royal collections: those of Charles IV, Isabel II as a child, Alfonse XII and Alfonse XIII, all later than 1804, the date of the reform that modified the design.
