Description
East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, reign of Emperor Guangxu, ca. 1878 CE. An incredible blue-on-white porcelain jardiniere with a dragon motif as well as an intricately detailed and legible inscription, dated to midwinter of the third year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu (ruled from 1875 to 1908 CE). The vessel rests on a ring base and the cylindrical body rises up to a broad rim that overhangs the interior, all painted with a scrolling stylized cloud motif. The body is encircled by 2 dragons flying over water and clouds, and both flank a temple resting on lotus petals. The temple panel contains the vertical columns of Chinese characters, and additional characters are set within a rectangular register just below the rim. The translated script is a dedication and prayer for a member of a family. Size: 14" Diameter x 12.75" H (35.6 cm x 32.4 cm)
