In 1925, Xu Beihong got into trouble when he wsa studying in France. His good friend Huang Menggui, the director of the Fujian Department of Education, entrusted Xu Beihong to his second brother Huang Manshi in Singapore. Because Huang Manshi helped Xu Beihong get out ot trouble at the most difficult time, Xu Beihong forged a deep friendship with Huang Manshi. Xu Beihong regarded Huang Manshi as "the first confidant of his life" and honored Huang Manshi as his second brother. Huang Manshi's residence is called JiangXiaTang. From 1925 to 1942, Xu Beihong went to Singapore many times, and his longest stay at JiangXiaTang was nearly three years. He painted many important works here, incluidng Miss Jenny, Lay Down Your Whip and The statue of Governor Thomas. He also painted a large number of horsed here, leaving the "ten thousand horses galloping JiangXiaTang" reputation. He painted hundreds of paintings, mostly of horses, for Huang Manshi's poems.

What Huang Manshi was most proud of in his life was his collection of more than 100 Chinese folding fans, and he took "BaiShanZhai" as his nickname. Huang Manshi's collection is mostly painting, followed by calligraphy, especially the paintings of Xu Beihong, Qi Baishi and Zhang Daqian. Huang Manshi has a wide range of friends, wealth and hospitality. He has considerable economic strength and social prestige in Singapore, and loves tranditional Chinese art very much. He is especially generous to famous calligraphers and painters who have visited Xingzhou. His study is called BaiShanZhai, which collects countless modern famous calligraphy and paintings. This BaiShanZhai's old collection of calligraohy and painting is antique, well preserved and cost-effective.
