Description
An Eastern Greek Style Gandharan Lion A composite museum copy of a 2nd Century Gandharan slate lion, H: 7 ½ in (19.1cm), 7 1/3 in (18.7cm). The original resides in storage at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Philadelphia with the description 'Lion in front of a pier. Micaceous slate, carved in the round. Alexander Scott notes say 'temple guardian for ornamenting the step of a small shrine'. The original was found on the Alexander Scott Expedition to India (1915-1918). The underside contains a partial description and a University Museum, Philadelphia label, underneath the collection number.
