Description
A SILVER 'LOTUS AND PEONY' BOX, QING
China, dated year of Yiwei (1895). Embossed in high relief to depict leafy peonies, lotus and two cranes. The same motif is found on the sides, but with crabs, lobster and fish. Extremely fine incision work.
Provenance: From the collection of Alexander Popov in Novi Sad, Kingdom of Serbia, acquired between 1900-1920.
Condition: Wear, traces of use and minor dents.
Weight: 225.2 grams.
Dimensions: Diameter 8.5 cm
The base bears the Shou sign within a key fret border. The inscription on the lid reads: "Dewdrops fall on the lotus and one can perceive their scent" and "Shadows of the lotus fall on the water below the moon".
