attributed to Michael Allison, c. 1812, tiger maple, maple, cherry, and satinwood and ebony veneers, the pullout secretary drawer centered by inlaid satinwood elliptical outlined in ebony, centered by emblematic spread eagle in contrasting woods headed by 18 stars, flanked by diamonds outline in ebony centered by urn with covers within ellipses, original hardware with backplate emblematic of the Great Seal of U.S., over three drawers with conforming ebony outlining, over serpentine apron with inlaid pendant, mounted on flaring French feet
h. 45 w. 47-1/2 d. 20 in.

n.b. the desk relates closely to a group of chests retaining labels of Michael Allison (1773-1855); one illustrated on p. 32, New York Furniture at the New York State Museum, N.Y. by John L. Scherer. another by Barry Tracy, Federal Furniture and Decorative Arts at Boscobel, p. 84 & 85

lower drawer has replaced bottom, one of three back boards replaced, secretary drawer with new green baize, several amateur veneer repairs and veneer missing on pendant
