Roman marble bust of a barbarian possibly Ancient
Item Details
Description
A large Roman carved marble bust of a barbarian
possibly Ancient
Raised on an iron stand.
height 26 1/4in (66.5cm); width 15 1/2in (39.5cm); depth 16 1/2in (42cm)
Provenance: Property from a Private London Collector.

Footnote: The term barbarian originates from an ancient Greek word meaning babbler. In ancient Roman society it came to refer to anyone outside the bounds of the empire - Germanics, Celts, Gauls, Iberians, Thracians, Illyrians, Berbers, and Sarmatians. In art, they are depicted as feral, with unruly hair and intense faces to emphasize their perceived lack of civility, their otherness , as a form of imperial propaganda.
Condition
Overall worn condition. Apparently broken in half horizontally through center of face at mustache and restored. Another horizontal break and repair just below Adam’s apple. With infill visible around perimeter. Nose largely absent. Restorations and later applied material to mustache. With losses and scattered cracks overall.
