Description
Karen Frog Drum in relief cast bronze, from the modern regions of Hunnan, Viet Nam, Laos, Burma, Heger III Type, with bulging upper body set on a tapered and flared base, with four ribbed ribbon handles for hanging, three of four frogs remaining, the tympanum top decorated with a fourteen point star having butterflies between the points, surrounded by eleven geometric bands. Hung from a tree and beaten to call forth natural spirits of protection for important ceremonies and agricultural events, often as a harbinger of rain. 15 1/2" tall, 26" diam. Weathered, dents and losses to lower rim. Includes black painted wooden stand for use as an end table. 26 1/2" to table surface when on stand. Provenance: From the Estate of Rosemarie Wolfe, Cape Elizabeth ME and Palm Beach FL.
