Description
Dimensions: 3-3/8" H x 3-3/4" Dia.
Chinese Qing Dynasty Kangxi porcelain brush washer. Deep curvature, of a deep vessel, round feminism upward to form the flaring opening rim, with round foot base rim. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered masterfully covered in an even coat of a deep black glaze which terminates at the base to reveal the pure white underglaze. The black glaze creates a mottled effect around the rim which is likened unto the blushing of human skin. The foot rim reveals the cut edges during the making process, and the receded central interior base left white underglaze. A characteristic heaped and piled effect, the underglaze grayish-blue concentrates in certain areas, bubbling through the surface of the glaze and turning a deep blue-black. The glaze appearance on the blue painting resembled the texture of an orange peel "ju-pi" (chu-p'i) or a chicken skin. This inadvertently gave texture, energy, and shading to the design. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned. Mark on under base, a horizontal six underglaze script characters reign mark, Kangxi Reign Period of Great Qing Dynasty.
